XEN 45 Gel Stent Combo: Five-year study shows sustained efficacy in glaucoma managemen

The combination of ab interno XEN 45 gel stent implantation with phacoemulsification in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) demonstrates promising long-term efficacy and safety, according to a study.

The results, based on a comprehensive analysis of 91 eyes, demonstrated a significant decrease in mean IOP from 20.2 mmHg at baseline to 15.4 mmHg at the 5-year mark. Similarly, the average number of ocular hypotensive medications decreased from 2.9 to 1.5 over the same period.

In terms of secondary outcomes, the study investigated changes in visual field mean deviation (VFMD) from baseline. The baseline VFMD of -10.3 dB showed a modest increase to -10.9 dB at the 5-year follow-up (P < 0.01), suggesting a clinically acceptable visual field change throughout the study period.

The overall safety profile of the procedure was satisfactory, with low rates of intraoperative complications and adverse events.

Notably, 75% of eyes remained free from failure at the 5-year mark.
